16-Year-Old Foster Dog Steals Her Dad’s Heart, And He Can’t Let Her Go Again

She was 16 years old and had spent five weeks at a shelter.

The plan was simple. She would leave the shelter, enter foster care, and eventually find another home.

But her foster dad soon realized he could not say goodbye.

At 16, She Finally Left the Shelter

The senior dog had arrived with five other small dogs.

According to the story shared at the shelter, a man had been left with all six dogs after his wife left him. The little senior eventually ended up at the shelter.

She stayed there for five weeks.

Then Lee Asher came to take her home as his new foster dog.

She was tiny, weighing only about five pounds. But at 16 years old, she was about to begin a very different chapter.

Lee brought her home to meet his pack.

There were many new faces waiting for her. Lee introduced her to dogs including Tony, Pancans, Beau, Lily, and others in the home.

But the senior dog quickly became especially interested in Lee.

She followed him constantly.

Lee believed she was afraid he might leave her.

So he gave her a warm fire, a comfortable bed, and plenty of love. He could tell how happy she seemed to be outside the shelter.

At one point, she held tightly onto a blanket.

Watching her do that broke Lee’s heart.

She was almost always close to him. If she was not at his feet, she was in his arms.

Lee could hardly believe someone had given her up.

Mickey Started Acting Like a Puppy Again

Soon, the little dog had a new name.

Lee decided to call her Mickey.

He began taking Mickey on walks alone. Those quiet moments gave them time together and helped them build trust.

But Mickey was also spending time with the pack.

Lee noticed something changing.

Being around the other dogs seemed to make the 16-year-old Mickey act like a puppy again.

She even had a little trot as she moved along.

Tony also stayed close to her during their walks. Lee noticed him right beside Mickey and said it looked like Tony was protecting her.

Then Mickey’s world became even bigger.

Lee started taking her on bike rides and skateboarding trips.

It soon became clear to him that Mickey wanted adventure.

So he decided they should go somewhere together.

A Tiny Dog Sets Off On A Big Adventure

Lee packed up the bus and prepared to hit the road.

Mickey was coming too.

Once they were traveling, she looked out the windows with her tongue hanging out. Lee described her as having the time of her life.

The little foster dog who had spent weeks at a shelter was now seeing the world from the road.

And somewhere along the way, Lee’s original plan fell apart.

Mickey was supposed to be a foster.

He truly planned to care for her and then find her a permanent home.

But Mickey had already become something more.

“This little five pound dog just completely stole my heart,” Lee said.

He could not imagine asking her to move into another home.

Lee said he had never loved a dog so quickly.

This Time, Mickey Was Staying

By the time they returned home, Lee already knew what he wanted.

Mickey was not leaving.

“As soon as she was home, I knew she was home,” he said.

At 16 years old, Mickey had already experienced another home and five weeks in a shelter. Lee did not want her to have to move again.

He decided his home would be her final one.

What began as a foster arrangement had become something neither of them would have to say goodbye to.

Mickey could stay with the pack, continue her adventures, and remain beside the person she had followed so closely from the beginning.

Lee had gone to the shelter expecting to help a senior dog find a home.

Instead, the tiny five-pound dog found hers with him.

“Welcome to the pack,” Lee told her.

And this time, Mickey would not have to leave again.
